Mettur is a big Industrial town situated 32kms away from Salem City. Mettur is said to be the arterial town for the whole district.  The major industries which are situated in this area are,

• Chemplast (produces Chemicals, soaps etc)
• MALCO (Madras aluminum Co.) -one of the industry established by britisher’s
• SISCOL  (Southern Iron and Stell Co. Ltd)

Mettur Thermal power station is a very important grid for TamilNadu state. This is the power station which supplies power to Salem City, southern parts of Karnataka and neighboring industries.

Stanley Reservoir is situated in this town. This is an important source of water for Northern part of TamilNadu. This Reservoir is the Largest Fishing reservoir in south India. Mettur Dam is said to be one of the largest of its kind. Built in the period of British India during 1934.  This is the main attraction for Tourist’s to this area. Salem District Tourism maintains a Leisure park near the Dam itself.  

The muniappan temple situated in this town also attracts religious deities to the place.

The Scenic location of the town and the Dam itself attracts many numbers of tourists to this place.

How to get there?

The Road Travel between Salem and mettur will be scenic along the Farm Lands a nd mountain views. It takes around 30 to 45 minutes to reach mettur from Salem City.  There are Frequent bus services from Salem Central Bus Stand to Mettur Town.

There is a Railway station situated very near to MALCO before Mettur Town. There is a morning and evening train to and fro to Mettur from Salem Junction, the train further goes till Erode from Salem Junction.
