We shall have discussion on Bus transport in Salem.

Wrote letter to Dt.Collector regarding city bus facilities

Respected Sir

Sub: Convenient city bus facilities to Salem people.

Salem being 4th largest city in TamilNadu is lacking city bus connectivity to various parts of it. Presently all city buses are operated from City Bus stand called old bus stand.

The MGR Bus stand called as New bus stand is 2nd largest bus stand in TN having excellent bus connectivity to various parts of TN but not having connected with parts of Salem. Only No.13 operated from Salem old BS to New BS and buses towards Omalur & Junction pass to it. Every Salemite who uses this BS needs to travel in two buses by spending extra time & money.

Please, please arrange for shifting the old BS to new BS premises where enough space available on Angammal colony side and also provide atleast 6 terminal BS and operate buses from these places as detailed below:

1) New BS terminal – The mofussil buses from New BS via Omalur Road should be diverted towards Multiplex & Bye-pass and make free the Omalur Road only for City buses.
All buses from Ammapet & Gugai to be extended upto New BS/Junction
25% Buses via Hastampatti to be diverted towards RK Road-4 Road-New BS
25% buses via Hastampatti to be diverted via Sarada College Rd-5 Road-New BS
25% buses via Hastampatti to run as it is to old BS
25% remaining buses to run other terminals.
50% of buses presently running via New BS to Old BS to be curtailed upto New BS.

2) Junction terminal – No buses allowed to stand more than 3 minutes at Junction premises to ease congestion consequent to extend more buses upto Junction.
3) Ammapet Colony – Atleast once in 15 minutes buses to be operated to other terminals.
4) Seelanaickenpatty terminal – New routes tried from this terminal via bye-pass on either side i.e. towards Ammapet side and towards new BS side.
5) Hastampatty terminal – New routes tried from this terminal via Manakkad-Johnson Nagar and via Chinnathirupathi
6) Kondalampatti terminal
Also no new routes created for the past 20 years in city area but city developed to 5 times bigger during this period. The new colonies/nagars created in various parts of city nearby Hastampatti, Chinnathirupathy, ITI, Ammapet, Karungalpatti, Seelanaickenpatty are badly need the bus services to various parts of city.

Like other cities Salem also needs circular buses on either sides. Some prominent successful routes are (1) Old BS-Hastampatty-5-Roads-4 Roads-Old BS (2) Junction-5 Roads-4 Roads-Leigh Bazar-3 Roads-Junction (3) Hastampatty-Manakkadu-Anai Medu-Ammapet-Pattaikoil-old BS-Vincent-Hastampatty (4) Seelanaickenpatty-Bye-pass-New BS-Old BS-Gugai-Seelanaickenpatty (5) 5 Roads-Hastampatti-Old BS-Gugai-Seelanaickenpatti-Byepass-5 Roads etc.

We always remember the Collector who shifted the Mofussil BS from old BS to the present MGR BS premises some 15 years back within a night with so many hurdles and agitations. The same kind of action requested from you to remember to you as well for more & more years.

Please do the needful for the lakhs of Salem people.

Note : Also look into the aspect of ROB at both Mulluvadi gates, Anaimedu and sub ways at New BS & 5 Roads for easy movement.

when does our city gets air bus as town bus like cities like chennai and kovai

Rakkesh.., i dont think we need Airbus in salem until it becomes 4 lane road. operating Airbus in Trichy main may lead to more congestion and accidents. Feel current private buses really doing good jobs compare to other cities.

Welcome to this community.

We have only one vestibule bus which is semi low floor and air suspension bus running in the city from town bs to omalur via central bs, 5 roads, periyar university and then the same bus proceed to Tharamangalam.

Other divisions like TNSTC-Madurai, Coimbatore, Kumbakonam (Trichy), Villupuram got handful of semi low floor air buses for city bus service, Salem got only one for name sake. It is because of step mother treatment from the transport department of state government.

With the current trend, I doubt whether Salem city can have any other new air suspension or AC buses like Chennai/CBE/Madurai for another 2-3 years.

Dear Kannan,

ANother nice letter.

But, the present Old Bus stand should continue operating as its the only one for down town Salem.

We cannot terminate all the buses from the present Town BS as it will affect the commuters originating from fort/old/down town area.

Salem not requiring much Air buses for city bus since it is costly affair and will affect daily users. Whereas Salem must requies AC buses to Chennai and other places.

Dear Arul

I agree that old BS also be a terminus.

If we implement any new thing definetely one portion of people will be effected. For the benefit of large we/they have to sacrify this. Also as per my suggestion the affect is not that much for fort area people and still they get good number of buses to all parts of city.
