The Salem Airport is being expanded by 1000 acres of land. Lighting arrangements are currently made at a cost of 1.38 crores to facilitate arrival and departure of flights in night time.

The Salem Airport was established at Kamalapuram in 1992 with 250 acres of land. And NEBC operated small air-planes from the Salem Airport and the Airport was closed. Only VIP's used the airport on their visit to the region.

In the Governor's speach few days back, it was mentioned that a new Airport will be established at Salem. So a question arised as to what the exact plan in Salem - is it to closed the existing airport and to construct a new one.

When the Agricultural Minister Veerapandi Arumugam was contacted on this, he stated that the state government has urged the central government to expand the airport and make it completely operational. The runway is also going to be expanded and the lighting arrangements are right now being made to facilitate arrival and departure in night time.


The Salem Airport is located 20km from the city on the Bangalore Highway at Kamalapuram. The Airport's runway is 6000 feet length. Lighting arrangements are being made, on either side of the runway with 10feet interval between two pairs of lights and thus a total of more than 1200 lights are being erected. Lands have been digged out for this purpose and cables are going to be laid. Construction materials like bricks, ballasts and sand have also been dumped along the runway. These works will be completed in a week of time. A seperate power sub-station is also established inside the airport.

The Airport is being expanded to handle high capacity passenger flights as well as cargo flights and thus the airport will become a commercial airport soon. 1000 acres of land have been acquired for this purpose. Survey has also been completed.

The present runway length is 1.8 km in the Salem Airport and this is being doubled in view of the airport expansion. The runway would extend upto Thinnapatti. Higher officials of AAI met few months ago regarding the expansion of Salem Airport and the expansion and decision on lighting arrangements were taken.
