Salem has many unexplored temples and historic places around the city. So Members please have your contributions and discussions related to it.

One of the lesser known temple near Salem. it is said this temple has a part in Lord Rama's lifetime.

Nice thread loggy.

It is great to here the temple is getting renovated. But thanthi has not given details like who built that temple and when it was built etc., Few temples which I would like to list here that has historical importance:

1. Tharamangalam Kailasanathar temple built in 10th century
2. Salem Sugavaneshwarar temple
3. Kottai Alagirinathar temple
4. Uthamasolapuram temple
5. Ayyodhiyapattinam Ramar temple

Hope in this thread we can gather information like, when these temples were built and history behind these temple.

Arul, i think Kottai Mariamman and Kottai Perumal koil also a very important temples.
Kottai Mariamman was some built by some king, its there in the temples carvings.
Kottai perumal koil is said to be built by some chola king.

The two Chinnathirupathi one at city and another Karuvalli near AP also very old one and attract more crowd.

the temples which can be sited for pilgrimage is

1. Fort mariamman temple - built by chola dynasty ppl who settled in salem.. still these ppl have priority in staring the festival with poochoridhal and ending the festival by palkudam

2. Fort Alagirnathar temple.- still the tulasi peedam remains the sample of ancient carvings

3. Kandharamam : posh temple where u can worship all the deities of the hindhu religion mainly the panitings of tamil translations of vedantas and vedhas proved to be an ethcial dictionary over the large space area

4. Suganeshwarar temple : suyambu (self orginated lingam) which was worshiped by parrots in the vilvam and neem forest.

5.Tharamangalam Kailasanathar temple : an great examaple for architecture mainly the balls insid ethe lions mouth , elephant gragging the rajagopuram . astrosigns in 12 partioned square and extrame bairavar ( lord who guards shiva ) in polished stone and many more u can see in this temple.. also a well built around 2000 yrs ago was also seen thr mentioned with date by archeological dept.. also a temple built on large single stone which is not concreted to the base also seen thr

6. Uthamasolapuram temple: the temple which relates both saivates and vaishnavtes due to presence of both shiva and vishnu sannathis.. also its an evident proof casting about ovvaiyar and the marriage of two princess of the pari vallal...

during that marriage occasion all the three mighty kings of tamil nation ( moovendars)
stayed in
cholas- uttamacholapuram (Uttama Chola ascended the Chola throne c. 970 C.E. succeeding Parantaka Chola II.)
pandyass - veerapady
cheras:- in salem ( some say to be chera illam -chealam-salem)

5. Ayyodhiyapattinam Ramar temple: in kambaramayana its mentioned it ram cannot reach the ayodhya in the desired time and star for his pattabishekam. while time he was here and he crowned by the ppl here tht time.. asl the temple was built by vijayanagara empire and he formed the town of ayodhyapattinam.

6. shevapet meenakshi sundareswara temple : some article came in dinakaran regarding this tht pandya kings while excile came here and workshiped their deity here.. tht article contains some info regarding tht.. i m not sure about the date.

7. kumaragiri murugan temple : shortlt termed as " kutti palani" as it has similar construction like palani tample.. it was orginated by some sitthar follower. u cant get a gud view of sale city better than this site.. but there is no proper road access to this temple.. if so definiotely it will be a famus one in the city..

8. sitthar koil : Many ppl say tht in these hills tht everyoung medicine is found. the stram here is enriched with medicinal values mainly cures scares pimples etc.. when taken in regular intervals of time

still many archeological things are therr in our city..not only as a pilgrimage but also as a tourist even...

Sri Kothandarama Swamy Temple to be renovated soon

To protect heritage: Members of the committee discussing renovation work to be done at the Sri Kothandarama Swamy Temple at Ayothiapattinam near Salem on Sunday. -

SALEM: The 400-year-old HR and CE-controlled Sri Kothandarama Swamy Temple at Ayothiapattinam, which houses many exquisite sculptures and paintings, near here will be renovated soon.

The majestic temple will soon have its Rajagopuram renovated at a cost of Rs. 8.30 lakh of which Rs. 4 lakh would be borne by the government.

The rest of the amount for other renovation works would be met from public contribution.

It is one of the few temples where Sri Ramar, the presiding deity could be seen in coronation ceremony.

The first meeting of the Renovation Committee was held on its premises on Sunday in which Committee Chairman and industrialist Selvamaligai S. Manickam and others members took part.

The HR and CE had formed a 25-member committee for the temple renovation in which vice chairman S. Balasundaram and Executive Officer Chandraprakasam took part.

Mr. Manickam said that the committee after its discussion had decided to preserve the rare sculptures and paintings in the temple.

“The services of experts will be requisitioned for the same,” he said.

The committee thanked Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam for initiating steps to form the committee to save the temple from further deterioration.

It also decided to go to people to collect funds for renovation works.
