hi... all...
when i was a kid my dad used to tell me that people used to find pearls across thirumanimuthar...... but now it is difficult to accept it as a river... leave alone the pearls!!!!
we in our team(TREMORS) sona college, want to do something about it... we went to ammapet lake and found no water there... cos the VAIKAL (water inlet ) has been blocked ...
how can we proceed with this... can u pls suggest....

Well, If SCIDSF registration gets completed, we can represent this case in our letter head to Collector, corporation commissionar and the Minister.

sir we are like planning to file a lot of RTIs and ask the govt what they are gonna do about the lakes... cos we heard from teh people that the govt is plannin to make it a housing plot.. we wanna file an ask many such questions.. what do u say...

this is what had ruined most parts of the landscapes in Chennai. When heavy rain comes, the house built in that particular area becomes fully immersed underwater.
we should not allow this happen in our city.

this sunday at 6 am we are cleaning up the mookeneri lake ( kannankurchi). it is organised by Salem citizens forum and students are volentering for it the clean up project. it will be followed by desilting of lakes and then tre plantantion..

Salem has been going thru the hottest days in the state all this march. With trees felled on most of the roads & in public places radiation levels have touched unbearable levels. The Barren Hills, Magnesite Mines add on to the radiation levels.
 The Rainfall of 850 mm received in Salem Dist last year has been the lowest in this century.
 The alarming dependence on River Kaveri has added newer problems, the industries such as Chemplast sanmar, Malco & Jindal’s in Mettur alone draw water from River Kaveri that would suffice for 13 lakh people.
 The cementing of River Thirumanimuthar has been highly damaging with regard to the recharge of groundwater is concerned. The lakes in salem city have not been desilted in years now. It is up to the Citizens of Salem to reclaim lost ground.

good things to start in the city

besides cleaning a lake in our city for an eventful time its gud to make private agencies and industries in and around the city to adopt the lake.. clean with help of the govt fund and public tie up..also leave tenders for the maintenance of lake and changing it to be the hot spots of interests

regarding the ammapet lake its quite seasonal in the water concert.. because during rainy season it the city many areas getting flooded due to its least water stagnant capability. From the chemical tests found the water in ammapet lake is fully polluted. so there may be sevaral contradictions of changing it to be an hot spot.. but if proper funding is provided by the govt sure it will be an hot spot of interest... first the lake should be cleaned and proper soil culture should be done bfore the rain in the city.. so the lake can get a better figure[/color]

sorry for the late late reply. the cleaning work got over and it took four sundays. now the desilting has started off in a great way. i ll mail u the progress of the work .
i feel that it would be very gr8 if all of us can come together and work. there is a forum called, Salem Citizens Forum (SCF) of which i am a member too which has taken up this initiative. we need to work more colsely as group. the plan is to make mookaneri into something like Vedanthangal bird sanctury with islands in between the lake. we will also have a camp site in one of these islands for various social activites. it will be nice if all of us can have a get together so that the clean up project picks up. the govt has said it cannot help with funds and the whole event has to take place from public money. the estimated budget is approx 18 lakhs!!

Its well and good if our people get some public awareness about the lakes and make our city green. i hope the green cover in our city is in decline plot.hope it will get into the recovery region by such activities
