Dear Arul

Branches from the existing Periar OB approx for one KM which will end near Town RS with brahcning at Brets Road & Cherry road is enough for this. It also gets easy connection with 4-Raods, new BS. But congestion will be there at Periar ROB.

OR Construct a double decker OB like Tirunelveli Town with one way on each will also do good.

Today I could contact Asst Commissioner of Police (Traffic),(over mobile) and could discuss the traffic chaos in the salem junction bus terminus.

My discussion were on ,
buses turning in the middle of the road while coming out of the junction terminus and blocking the road,
Trucks taking tiruvagoundanur roundtana from NH passing thro junction , reddipatti, and taking the NH back thro Mamangam , therby jamming the city roads in these areas,
Banners and indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the road in front of Salem Junction...

I could get a very good response and he shared with me that already discussions are on with city buses to take upto reddipatty from junction and then return via Salem Jn.. This means literally extending the buses bound for junction upto reddipatty ...

Also he has requested me to give a memorandum on this addressed to commissioner which will help him to take firm action. He also invited us to meet him and share ideas and suggestions for improvement of traffic flow in the city. His office is behind salem Fairlands police station.

I think thro our forum we can start interacing on all the issues we have in mind....

Also we must start meeting commissioner of the salem city municipal corporation thro our forum and may give written suggestions on various aspects of the city....

I Think we need to act fast on the registration process. Meanwhile, without even registering, we can use our letterhead, to chart out our wish list to COP and Corporation Commissioner.

Like Loggy said, we should quickly meet and make a beginning...

Dear Srini sir,

thanks for the information.

Let us arrive in good solution.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we go by the police plan, it will be good for passengers alighting at Salem Jn from the city buses. i.e the buses will enter as usual to the Jn and leave to Redipati.

But while coming from Redipati, surely it will create big bottle neck in that 2 lane road. Because now all the buses either have to stop opp. to Jn or in the curve (i.e the bakery opp. to post office)

1. traffic will pile up in the back of the buses
2. Pedestrians i.e the passenger coming from Jn should cross the road to go otherside to take the buses towards the city.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let us first discuss what best could be done.

The ultimate solution would be to have a control over the vehicles using the stretch between Suramangalam police station and the Junction.

90% of the buses to Medical College / Steel Plant / Tharamangalam should be diverted to use Five Roads, Kurangu Chavadi, Steel Plant Road.

But I am not sure if the bus operaors (including TNSTC) will accept for such a change, as Thiyagarajar Polytechnic, Sona College and the Junction are the major revenue yielding stops, that will not be covered.

But private vehicles bound for Medical College, Steel plant and beyond could be encouraged to use the Kuranguchavadi route for speedy travel as they can avoid the congested TPT, Junction area.

Alternate route has to be found to connect the Suramangalam Police station intersection and the Steel Plant Road.

The stretch between Suramangalam Police Station intersection and Railway Junction should be used only by the vehicles boud for Junction.

an bus terminus also can be a good solution.. (Salem needs bus terminus in few other corners of city too...)
we can avoid buses coming right inside railway premises and there will be ample space for car/bike parking..
There is adequate land available on back side of suramangalam police station.. i don't think rail passengers will mind walking a few meters to take the bus.. Or if DIVISION OFFICE is shifted to a new place, that land can also be used..

Hi Loggy,

Certain people will definitely mind walking such distance. There were stiff agitations, when the Junction buses were terminated near the Suramangalam Police Station when the road between the police station and the railway station was being re-laid.

All the news papers wrote bad about it with photographs of elderly people walking to the station. But the papers failed to understand that this is to make the situation get better.

And the original plan, was to make the Police Station - Junction stretch a 4-lane road, by destructing the shops around Junction. But due to cheap politics the 4-laning ended at the Police station and hence the traffic snarls near Junction seem to be having no end.

Authoriries need to act hard, and get this stretch widened at the earliest, of course with necessary compensation paid for the shops/buidings that will have to be destroyed. It is very important need of the hour and will solve all the traffic problems.

With this, they can do some rearrangements, and avoid the sharp turn near the Junction.
