Salem Metropolitan Region

Dear Members,

This is another needed topic which should be in discussion. Before if comes into reality, let us put our dreams, suggestions atleast in the papers (opps net...)

A region crossing 10lakhs population can be called as Metropolitan region! There should be a day were we call Yercaud as the suburban of Salem.... Anyway today's news in Dinamani inspired me to start this topic.

I will come up with some more info. about on this topic.

Salem is extending lot so I think the places behind the above mentioned areas will soon be urban. To think Salem as Metro gives me lots of excitement. What is the current population of our city? and the population growth stat?

Dear Members,

On these days I was preparing the map for Salem Metro region. But I find lot of places/villages of Salem Taluk falls under rural cover. i.e 25% of Salem taluk population or surrounding the city is rural. The rural population is around for 2.5lakhs without considering the villages between Steelplant road to Kamalapuram airport stretch. This part comes under Omalur taluk. I will update that part in coming days.

Looks we badly need
1. new road (4-lane) alignment between NH 47 and NH 7
2. Expanding Veeranam road and there by traffic from SH 18 can be diverted to this road
3. Making the Sitharkovil road as 4 lane road.

The blue part comes under Salem Taluk and red one is core Salem city with 7lakh pop

In fact, we posted these statistics from 2007 in SSC thread, but our Trichy friends (as) always continued saying that this is just projection. And we gladly accepted to wait till 2011 for official figures.

But, this forecast by world-gazeteer might be based on the past growth, from 1991 to 2001. This is the time period when more areas were added to corporation during its formation. So that growth should not be taken directly to forecast the growth in subsequent years, as we do not add still such high volume of areas again.

But, 2011 census will definitely show a very close match between Salem and Trichy. And I still strongly believe that Salem will surpass Trichy. But we have to wait and see.

Corporation should seriously think about expanding the boundaries, especially on Yercaud Road, Kannankurichi, Udayapatti, Kondalampatti and Seelanaickenpatti sides.

vijayan.. i don't see a CLOSE match... Salem will fairly be higher than trichy.

Here is the map with most of the villages and Town Panchayat surrounding the city

And growth centers, my dream is to have the bigger circle as Metropolitan region with enough infra and making then as Urban

arul, u want yercaud to be in metro region? or you couldn't avoid drawing the circle to fall in the mountain region?

The above circle will form around 15lakhs. And area would be less than 650 Sqkm which half of Salem dt population.

Surely these rural areas are not the exact rural area, the Suburban towards Omalur is classified as Rural.......... but see these two pictures, one from Yercaud and another one from GE... In GE we can see trace of lights around Salem forming like a ring road from NH 7 near Omalur to Steelplant to Illampillai to Magudanchavadi to Mallur
