Comment on Salem airport has potential to emerge as aviation hub by Sundaram Sun, 01 Mar 2009 08:47:05 +0000 /?p=346#comment-14 As long as Tamilnadu airports are controlled by AAI what you mention is a pipe dream. It is high time that state government manages the airports. It is well known that AAI is a cash-strapped organization and have their hands full just trying to maintain the northern airports which have higher priority. 15 crores for an empty building in Salem is not a joke and waste of public money. TN leaders should step up pressure to bring TN airports under the state government fold.

Operate more buses to Yercaud Foothills

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Vigilance Council has urged the Salem Division of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) to operate more buses from the new integrated bus stand to Yercaud foothills and Kannankurichi during the peak hours.

People are finding it difficult to travel to Yercaud foothills and Kannankurichi as the number of bus services to these places is less, Council Chairman S. Selvam said at the consumers meeting organised by the TNSTC’s Salem Division here recently.

He also complained that the limited stop service were operated as ordinary service and the vehicles were being stopped at all the stops.

Salem has got a new retail showroom now. Tulsi Retail the famous chain of retail outlet made its presence since last week.

Tulsi retail is set up on Saradha college at brindhavan road junction. Its a 35000 square feet store.

The store has more than 50 brands under one roof at a nominal prices. Salem shoppers had got a world-class outlet with this new store.

Newly-laid road damaged

Lack of coordination between the State Highways and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has led to the damage of the newly-laid Sarada College Road in the city.

The Highways Department spent over Rs. 7 crore to widen the Sarada College Road and Junction main road, which connect Salem Railway Junction and Hasthampatti a few months ago.

The work received appreciation from the citizens as it eased traffic congestion on these two roads to a great extent.

A large number of people in the city use these roads every day as they connect important places in the city.

But to the dismay of all, the TNEB has started digging trenches on the Sarada College Road to lay underground power cables recently, completely damaging the newly-laid stretch inviting sharp criticism from the citizens of the city.

“The TNEB, which received approval for the underground power cable project long ago, could have completed the work before the beginning of the road improvement work. We have waited for about two months for the TNEB officials to begin their project. But the inordinate delay on their part had forced us to take up the road work first,” highways officials pointed out.

Sources in TNEB said the delay in the project was due to problems in purchasing the underground power cables. Senior officials, however, said the road cuttings were made only on Sarada College Road. In many other places, the cables were being laid without damaging the road. “We will re-lay the damaged portion immediately after completing the work,” they said.

Salem airport has potential to emerge as aviation hub

Untapped potential: A view of the Salem airport building.

The airport at Salem may emerge as an aviation hub in the State next only to Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi and Madurai.

Available data shows travel agents get 1,500 bookings every month for destinations such as Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and another 250 to 300 to various international destinations from this Tier II city.

The airport, if operationalised, will cater to passengers from half a dozen districts, including Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri, besides Salem. Airports Authority of India sources say the airport may attract 3,000 to 5,000 passengers a month.

While textile, granite, turmeric and other agricultural products from Salem and its surroundings are exported through Chennai, Tuticorin and Kochi ports, flowers, mangoes and eggs are exported through Coimbatore and Bangalore airports. Mango pulp export alone accounts for 50,000 tonnes per annum, says an AAI official.

From a commercial point of view, too, Salem is an important place, says the official. Airlines have been evincing interest in starting operations from Salem to Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai.

The presence of a large number of industries such as the Salem Steel Plant indicates tremendous growth potential in air traffic in the years to come, he says.

About facilities available at the Salem airport, the AAI authorities say it has a 6,035-ft-long runway. A VHF communication system as well as a standby facility are available. Hotline facility with the police control room and fire station is also there.

The AAI has received enquiries for starting flying clubs in Salem. As the city is between Chennai and Bangalore, it can serve as an alternative airport.

Botanical Garden for Salem

The long-pending dream of people in Salem and its neighbouring districts to have a botanical garden at the crown of Shevaroys will soon be a reality, with the State Government earmarking Rs. 10 crore for the purpose.

The Horticulture Department officials are busy preparing a proposal for the establishment of botanical garden at Yercaud.

The department has identified 36 acres of land located near MGR Nagar and another four-acre land located on the way to the Gents seat view point for the garden.

Horticulture Director Chandramohan inspected the lands on November 26 along with a team including construction engineers and horticulture officials.

A sprawling landscape will be created with imported grass. The lands identified for the garden have hard rocks, which will be levelled during the establishment.

A detailed proposal is being prepared and will be submitted to the State Government shortly, he added.

Mr. Dasarathan hoped that the initiative would attract more tourists to the hill station, which would help bring-in more revenue. Construction works would be taken up after getting Government’s nod and the establishment of the garden would be completed in two years, he said.
